It is not a ranking problem
When an assistant answers “who should I use for X in Y”, it is not running your keywords against an index and reading off the top ten. It is assembling an answer out of whatever it can find said about you, in places other than your own website, and then checking whether those places agree with each other.
That is a different game from search, and it explains the thing that puzzles most owners: a business can sit at position three in Google for its main term and still be completely absent from the answer an assistant gives to the same question. The ranking signal and the citation signal are not the same signal.
The three reasons a business is missing
In practice it is almost always one of these, and they need different work:
| Reason | What it looks like | What actually fixes it |
|---|---|---|
| The crawler cannot read you | Your site is built in the browser, so a crawler that does not run JavaScript receives an almost empty page | Server-rendered HTML. Nothing else matters until this is true |
| Nothing outside your site mentions you | You exist on your own domain and nowhere else. No directory, no trade body, no listicle, no review platform | Getting into the sources that already get cited in your market |
| The mentions disagree | Three versions of your company name, two addresses, an old phone number, a defunct trading name | Making the record consistent everywhere it appears |
The first is a half-day fix and most agencies never check it. The second and third are slow, unglamorous and are what actually moves the needle.
The empty-page problem, tested
This one is worth checking yourself in about a minute, because it is binary and because a surprising number of modern sites fail it. Open your site, view source, and search the raw HTML for a sentence you can see on the page. If it is not there, the text is being assembled in the browser after the page loads.
Some AI crawlers execute JavaScript. Several do not, and several more have a budget for it that a heavy site exhausts. A site that fails this test is not being judged badly by an assistant. It is not being read at all.
Why one source is never enough
Assistants are built to avoid asserting things they cannot corroborate, which is why a business whose only mention is its own marketing copy tends to be skipped rather than repeated. Your own site is evidence of what you claim. It is not evidence that the claim is true.
The practical consequence is that the highest-value work is often not on your website at all. It is on the eight or ten places an assistant is likely to read when it is asked about your trade in your area, none of which you control and most of which you can get into.
What nobody can promise you
There is no ranking to buy, no submission form, no schema tag that inserts you into an answer, and no agency with a relationship at any of these companies. Answers vary between assistants, between sessions, and between phrasings of the same question. Anyone offering you a guaranteed position in ChatGPT is either confused or selling.
What can be done is narrower and real: make the site readable, make the facts about you consistent, and get you into the sources that are already being cited. Whether that produces a mention is then out of everybody's hands, which is an uncomfortable thing to put on a services page and the reason most agencies do not.

Why does ChatGPT not know my business exists?
Most often because nothing outside your own website mentions you. An assistant assembles an answer from sources it can corroborate, and a business that appears only on its own domain has nothing to corroborate. The second most common cause is a site built in the browser, which some AI crawlers receive as an almost empty page.
Does schema markup get me into AI answers?
It helps a machine understand what a page is about, and it is worth having for that reason. It is not an entry ticket. No amount of JSON-LD makes an assistant mention a business it has no independent reason to believe exists.
Is this the same as SEO?
It overlaps but it is not the same. Ranking is about your pages. Being cited is mostly about other people's pages. A business can rank well and be invisible to assistants, and occasionally the reverse.
How long does it take?
The readability fix is immediate. Consistency across listings takes weeks because each source has its own claim and edit process. Getting into new sources takes months and some of it never happens, because editors and trade bodies say no.
Can you guarantee I will be mentioned?
No, and that is not a hedge. There is no mechanism through which anyone could guarantee it. What is guaranteed is the work: the audit, the fixes and the submissions, with a record of what was done and what came back.
