The part of the pipeline you stop renting
Advertising stops the day you stop paying. Search rankings and a strong Google Business Profile keep producing enquiries through the quiet months, at a falling cost per enquiry. It is slower, and for a firm that intends to still be trading in five years it is the better asset.

In short
SEO for UK trade and service businesses, built as a page per service and per area that each answer one question completely, rather than one services page listing eleven things. It produces enquiries in months rather than weeks, which is why paid search usually carries the gap. Where SEO is the wrong answer for a business, we say so.
Four things, in this order
Google Business Profile — the biggest local lever
For “scaffolding near me” type searches, the map pack sits above everything and takes most of the clicks. Getting that right means correct categories and service areas, genuine recent photographs of your own jobs, the services list populated properly, questions seeded and answered, and — above all — a steady flow of real reviews. Not thirty in one week; four a month, forever. We build the system that asks for them automatically after a job completes.
Technical foundation
Can Google read your site on the first pass without executing JavaScript? Does it load in under two and a half seconds on a mid-range phone on 4G? Does every page have its own title, description and heading? Do your service pages carry structured data? These are not exotic questions, and a surprising number of trade websites fail all four.
Pages that match how people search
People search by service and by place: “flat roof repair Winchester”, “scaffolding hire Southampton”. That needs real pages with real content about that service in that place — jobs you have done there, areas you cover, local specifics like conservation-area rules or council pavement licences. A handful done properly, not hundreds spun from a template.
Authority
Consistent name, address and phone number across the directories that matter in the UK trade sector, trade association and accreditation listings, supplier and merchant pages, and genuine local coverage. Not bought links — those are a liability you inherit for years.
An unusual thing we will tell you
A great deal of SEO sold to trade businesses is programmatic page generation: one template, a list of four hundred towns, and a script. It produces a site that looks enormous and ranks for almost nothing, because the pages are indistinguishable from one another.
Since March 2024, Google's spam policies name this explicitly as scaled content abuse, and enforcement is not theoretical. We have audited sites carrying hundreds of these pages while ranking for essentially none of them, and where the thin pages were actively dragging down the pages that deserved to rank.
If you already have a site like this, the fix is usually to cut hard and rewrite what remains — and to check Search Console data before cutting, so you keep anything that genuinely earns impressions.
What is included
- Technical audit, then ongoing fixes
- Google Business Profile optimisation and posts
- Review generation system and monitoring
- Local citation building and clean-up
- On-page optimisation of your key pages
- New service or area page each month where useful
- Monthly ranking, traffic and enquiry report
Realistic timeline
Month 1–2: technical fixes, profile rebuilt, review system live. Map rankings often move first.
Month 3–4: service and location pages ranking on page two to three, impressions climbing in Search Console.
Month 6–9: meaningful organic enquiry volume for service-plus-town searches.
Month 12+: organic becomes a material share of the pipeline and the cost per enquiry falls every month you keep it.
SEO questions
How long does SEO take for a trade business?
Google Business Profile work can move local map rankings in four to eight weeks. Website rankings for competitive service-plus-town terms realistically take three to six months to move and six to twelve to hold a top-three position. Anyone promising page one in thirty days is either targeting terms nobody searches or is not being straight with you.
Is Google Business Profile more important than my website?
For most local trade firms, yes — by a distance. The map pack sits above the organic results and takes the majority of clicks on ‘near me’ searches. A well-run profile with genuine recent reviews and real job photos will out-earn a great deal of website work.
Do I need to blog?
Not for the sake of it. Nobody hires a scaffolder because of a post about scaffolding history. Content earns its place when it answers a question a buyer genuinely searches — what scaffolding costs, whether you need a licence for a pavement, how long a flat roof lasts. Three genuinely useful pages beat thirty filler ones.
What about all those location pages agencies build?
This is worth being blunt about. Generating hundreds of near-identical pages by swapping the town name is exactly what Google's scaled content abuse policy was written to catch, and since 2024 it has been actively enforced. We build a small number of genuinely different local pages — real jobs, real areas, real specifics — and we would rather have eight good ones than four hundred thin ones.
Can you get me ranked without a new website?
Often, yes. If the current site is server-rendered, reasonably fast and structurally sound, we work with it. If it is a JavaScript app that serves Google an empty page on the first pass, or it takes eight seconds to load on 4G, we will say that the site is the bottleneck before we take your SEO money.
How is SEO billed?
A flat monthly fee, month to month, with no minimum term. It is a maintenance and compounding arrangement rather than a project: technical fixes, Google Business Profile management, citation building, on-page work and review generation, done consistently. We deliberately price it so a small firm can sustain it for two years, because two years is what SEO actually takes.
