Google Ads for driveway and surfacing firms, against a reputation you did not earn
Every driveway advertiser is bidding into a market that has read about doorstep tarmac gangs and seen the consumer programmes. Your ad copy is not competing on price. It is competing on whether the reader believes you will still exist in a fortnight.

In short
Google Ads for driveway and surfacing firms in the UK needs a different build from a generic Google Ads account, and this is how PipelineOS structures it. The domestic side splits by material, and this is not optional. Resin bound, block paving, tarmac and gravel buyers are different people with different budgets and different objections, and the searcher has almost always chosen the material before choosing a company. The first ad group to build is Resin bound driveways: highest value and the most researched material. The most common way this goes wrong: one ad group for all driveways.
How we build it
The domestic side splits by material, and this is not optional. Resin bound, block paving, tarmac and gravel buyers are different people with different budgets and different objections, and the searcher has almost always chosen the material before choosing a company. An ad group called “Driveways” serving a generic ad to someone who searched “resin bound driveway cost” loses to the competitor whose headline contains the words resin bound. So: one ad group per material, each with its own landing page, its own price range and its own gallery.
Trust is engineered into the campaign rather than mentioned on the site. The ad copy carries the counter-signals directly: written quote, no doorstep selling, no deposit before work starts, guarantee in writing, company registration and address visible. Sitelinks go to reviews and to a page of completed local jobs rather than to a services list. A small brand-defence campaign is genuinely worthwhile in this sector, because people search your company name alongside the word reviews or scam before they call, and if you are not there the aggregators are.
Commercial surfacing is a separate campaign entirely, on wider geography and office-hours scheduling, covering car parks, estate roads, line marking and patch repairs. It bids far higher per click and converts far more slowly. Match types stay tight on the material ad groups — broad match on driveway terms reaches driveway gates, driveway alarms, dropped kerb applications and planning permission questions — and the seasonal curve is steep: March to October carries the year, resin in particular cannot be laid reliably in cold or wet conditions, and spending in December buys enquiries for work you cannot schedule.
Ad groups
The account structure in practice. Ad groups stay tight so the ad can genuinely match the search, which lowers cost per click for the same position.
| Ad group | Example keywords | Bids and handling |
|---|---|---|
| Resin bound driveways | resin bound driveway cost, resin driveway [town], resin bound installer near me | Highest value and the most researched material. Bid up, and route to a page with per-square-metre pricing and an honest note on weather-dependent laying. |
| Block paving | block paving driveway [town], block paved driveway cost, driveway paving installer | The volume material. Competitive clicks, price-focused buyers, and the ad copy needs the guarantee and no-deposit line more here than anywhere else. |
| Tarmac and asphalt | tarmac driveway [town], asphalt driveway cost, tarmac drive resurfacing | The material most associated with doorstep trading, so bid it but write the ad to separate yourself explicitly. Negative out “cheap” and “cash” variants. |
| Commercial surfacing | car park resurfacing [county], estate road surfacing, commercial tarmac contractor, line marking | Separate campaign, office hours, wider radius, much higher bids. Judge on a six-month cycle rather than a monthly cost per enquiry. |

Domestic driveway advertising typically runs £600–£1,800 a month through the season and is cut sharply from November. Clicks sit at £3–£8, higher on resin terms where fewer firms compete but those that do bid seriously. Cost per enquiry generally lands between £30 and £80. Commercial surfacing is a different world: £80–£250 per enquiry and far fewer of them.
The domestic arithmetic is comfortable if the close rate holds. A resin driveway at £4,000–£9,000 or block paving at £3,000–£7,000, closing at one in four, means £120–£320 of advertising per job. Against those values that is small. What moves the close rate is not the campaign at all — it is how fast you quote and whether the quote looks like a document rather than a number on a text message. In a sector where the buyer’s main fear is being taken advantage of, a written, itemised quote delivered within forty-eight hours does more for cost per job won than any bid strategy available in the platform.
Four ways this goes wrong
- One ad group for all driveways. The searcher named their material and the winning ad is the one that repeats it back, so a generic headline loses clicks you have already paid to be eligible for.
- Ad copy that leads on price. In a trade with a doorstep reputation, the cheapest-looking advertiser is the most suspicious one, and “from £39 per square metre” attracts exactly the buyer who will haggle at the end.
- No brand campaign. People search your firm name plus reviews or scam before phoning, and if you do not appear there the review-aggregator pages and complaint threads do.
- Running resin campaigns through winter. Resin bound cannot be laid reliably in cold, wet weather, so you buy January enquiries for work that gets postponed until they have found someone else.

Questions
How do I separate myself from doorstep tarmac firms in an ad?
By putting the things they cannot say into the copy: written itemised quotes, no deposit until work begins, a registered company address, a guarantee in writing and reviews with dates. It reads as unremarkable to you and as reassuring to a reader who has just watched a consumer programme. It also lowers your click volume slightly and improves what arrives.
Should driveway firms bid on their own company name?
In this sector, yes. Buyers routinely search the company name alongside reviews, complaints or scam before committing several thousand pounds. Brand clicks cost pennies, and appearing at the top with a sitelink to genuine reviews means you shape that moment rather than an aggregator. It is one of the few brand-bidding cases we recommend without reservation.
Is commercial surfacing worth advertising alongside domestic?
Worth it, but never in the same campaign. Commercial buyers search different terms, work office hours, take months and accept a much wider travel radius. Left in a domestic campaign their handful of searches never get shown because the cheaper domestic clicks win the budget every time. Separate campaign, separate budget, separate measurement horizon.
