Removals & Storage

Marketing for removals & storage

Nobody browses for a removals firm. They have a completion date they did not choose, about forty-eight hours to sort it, and they will book whoever answers properly and can do the day. Everything in the marketing follows from that.

In short

Marketing for removals & storage in the UK turns on three things that are specific to the trade. Removals prices on volume, distance and how much of the packing you do. A single item or a man-with-a-van job is £60 to £200. Google search is where booked moves come from, but with a caveat that changes how the budget is spent. The biggest source of wasted spend is the word removal, searches such as rubbish removal and tattoo removal, which has to be negatived out before the budget means anything.

The economics that should drive the budget

Removals prices on volume, distance and how much of the packing you do. A single item or a man-with-a-van job is £60 to £200. A local two-bedroom move sits at £400 to £900, a three or four bedroom at £900 to £1,800. Long distance with a full pack runs £1,500 to £4,000, and European or international moves reach £2,500 to £8,000. Packing adds £150 to £600. The quiet prize is storage: containers at roughly £25 to £60 a week, billed for months, sold to somebody who has already paid you once and trusts you.

Close rates behave oddly in this trade, because they are governed by a date rather than by persuasion. If you are booked on the customer’s completion day, no amount of good quoting saves the job. Firms typically win one in three or one in four of the quotes they issue, and the losses cluster on availability and response time rather than on price. That makes speed of reply the single most valuable lever in removals marketing. A fixed quote out within an hour, on a date you can genuinely do, converts at a materially different rate to the same quote sent the following morning.

Seasonality

Removals runs on the housing market rather than the weather, which makes it unusually exposed to things you cannot control — interest rates, stamp duty changes, the length of the average chain. The broad pattern is a summer peak from June to September as families move around the school year, a strong spring, a sharp collapse from mid-December, and a January to February stretch where plenty of people list their houses and very few complete. The more useful pattern is weekly: completions cluster on Fridays and at month end, so the diary is jammed on a handful of days and empty in the middle of the week. Bidding harder for mid-week availability, and saying in the advert that a Tuesday move costs less, fills capacity that would otherwise be lost. Storage runs counter to all of it and rises whenever chains break.

What we configure

  • Move date and availability asked before anything else on the form
  • Instant quote calculator or video survey booking as the conversion action
  • Negative lists for van hire, storage collisions and the wider removal industry
  • Missed-call text-back, because a missed call here is a lost date
  • Storage run as its own campaign with lifetime value measured properly
  • Mid-week bid adjustments and mid-week pricing written into the ad copy
  • BAR membership, insurance figures and fixed-quote wording on the landing page

Where the budget leaks

Every sector attracts searches that can never become a customer. These are the ones specific to removals & storage, and they go into the negative keyword list before launch rather than after the first invoice.

CategoryExample searchesWhy it costs you
The word removalrubbish removal, tattoo removal, tree removal, asbestos removal, hair removalBroad match on removal is one of the worst money pits in trade advertising. Almost nothing in it is a house move.
Van hireluton van hire, self drive van, hire a van for the dayVast volume from people who have decided to do it themselves, and van hire firms bid it up on top.
Storage collisionsstorage heaters, cloud storage, storage boxes, storage units for saleStorage is an even worse keyword than removal, and it wastes budget in the campaign that ought to be the most profitable.
Boxes and employmentpacking boxes, bubble wrap, removals driver jobs, porter vacanciesRetail and job-seeker traffic that looks perfectly relevant in the report and never books a move.

What the buyer is actually checking

The removals customer is not really shopping. They are managing a fixed date they did not choose, usually while doing six other things, and they are frightened of two outcomes: nobody turning up, and something irreplaceable being broken. They will ask three firms for quotes inside forty-eight hours and book the one that answers well and can do the day.

What they check is narrower than it looks. Whether the quote is fixed or hourly, because an hourly quote on moving day reads as an open cheque. Whether the crew are employed or subcontracted. Goods in transit and public liability cover, and the actual figures. British Association of Removers membership, which carries real weight with anybody who has been let down before. And reviews, read specifically for careful, punctual and calm rather than cheap. The pre-move survey is where the job is genuinely won: a video survey takes fifteen minutes, costs nothing in travel, produces an accurate volume and turns a stranger into somebody who has already been round the house. Firms still insisting on an in-person survey for every enquiry quote fewer jobs and lose the quick ones.

Which channel wins here

Google search is where booked moves come from, but with a caveat that changes how the budget is spent. The head terms — removal companies, house removals — are bid up hard by comparison sites and lead-selling platforms whose economics are not yours. They sell the same enquiry to four or five firms and can therefore afford a click you cannot. Competing there head on is usually a loss. The money is in town and area terms, storage, long-distance routes and Google Business Profile, alongside an instant quote or survey booking that converts while the customer still has your tab open.

Two things do not work. Buying leads from those platforms is a margin-destroying habit, because you are quoting against three other firms for somebody who has already been rung twice. And Meta prospecting is close to useless here, because the trigger is a completion date and there is no audience for people who exchanged contracts last week. Meta deserves a small budget for retargeting people who abandoned the quote calculator, and nothing beyond that. The genuinely underused channel is estate and letting agents, who know about the move weeks before the customer starts searching for anyone.

Questions from removals & storage

Should I use Compare My Move, AnyVan or similar platforms?

For filling a gap in the diary, occasionally. As a growth strategy, no. The same enquiry goes to four or five firms, so you are quoting against people whose overheads you do not know, for a customer who has already been called twice. It trains you to compete on price in a trade where the margin is thin. Everything we generate is yours alone.

Why do my adverts show for tattoo and rubbish removal?

Because removal is one of the most ambiguous words in trade advertising. Broad and phrase match will cheerfully serve you against rubbish removal, waste removal, tree removal, asbestos removal and tattoo removal. The fix is tighter match types, house and home qualifiers in the keyword set, and a long negative list rebuilt weekly from the search terms report.

How do I fill Monday to Thursday?

Price for it and advertise it. Completions cluster on Fridays and at month end, which is why every removals firm in the county is busy on the same days and idle in between. A stated mid-week discount, higher bids on the days you need to fill, and a note in the quote that a Tuesday move is cheaper will shift a meaningful share of flexible customers, particularly rentals and part loads.

Is a video survey worth doing?

Yes, for almost every enquiry. It takes about fifteen minutes, costs nothing in travel, gives a proper volume estimate rather than a guess, and gets a fixed quote out the same day while the customer is still deciding. Keep in-person surveys for large houses, difficult access, and anything involving a piano, a safe or serious antiques.
