Google Ads for removals firms, where availability beats persuasion

A removals enquiry is not a preference, it is a date. Somebody completing on the 27th needs a van on the 27th, and no amount of good copy changes that. The campaign’s job is to reach them early and capture the date before three competitors do.

In short

Google Ads for removals companies in the UK needs a different build from a generic Google Ads account, and this is how PipelineOS structures it. Four campaigns, separated by price point rather than by service name. Full house removals is the main campaign. The first ad group to build is House removals by town: service plus town rather than head terms. The most common way this goes wrong: bidding on “removals” and “removal companies” against comparison sites.

How we build it

Four campaigns, separated by price point rather than by service name. Full house removals is the main campaign. Man and van is a second and must never share a budget with it, because a £250 single-item move converts far faster than a £900 three-bed move and will take the money. Long distance and European removals is a third, with a wider geography and a much higher value per booking. Storage and packing is the fourth, which produces recurring revenue and comes from a partly different searcher — people between properties or renovating.

The head terms are a trap. “Removals” and “removal companies” are dominated by comparison and lead-selling sites whose whole business model funds those clicks, and who will sell the resulting enquiry to you and three rivals. Bidding against them on their own ground is expensive and pointless. The account instead lives on specific long-tail structures: service plus town, town-to-town route terms, “man and van [town]”, “packing service [town]”, “storage while moving” and property-size terms like “3 bed house move cost”. These are cheaper, less contested and much closer to a booking.

Conversion design matters more than bidding. The form asks for move date and both postcodes before anything else, because without the date you cannot tell whether you are even available and you cannot prioritise the enquiry. Scheduling weights evenings and Sunday, when people who exchanged on Friday sit down to organise the move, and the calendar drives budget: Fridays and month ends are the in-demand dates, summer carries the year, and a firm already booked solid for August should be pushing September rather than buying August clicks. Geography is presence-only around the origin postcodes, since the move is defined by where the customer currently lives.

Ad groups

The account structure in practice. Ad groups stay tight so the ad can genuinely match the search, which lowers cost per click for the same position.

House removals by townhouse removals [town], removal company [town], 3 bed house move costService plus town rather than head terms. Property-size language converts well because it lets you quote a realistic figure in the first reply.

Budget and the arithmetic

Most removals firms work at £400–£1,200 a month, rising through spring and summer and cut back over winter apart from the January rental churn. Clicks run £2–£6 on long-tail terms and considerably more on the head terms the comparison sites contest. Cost per enquiry generally lands at £15–£45, which looks cheap until you apply the close rate.

That close rate is the whole calculation. Nearly every mover gathers three quotes, so a booking rate of one in four to one in eight is normal, putting cost per booked move somewhere around £80–£300. A local three-bed move at £450–£1,200 or a long-distance move at £1,200–£3,000 carries that easily. What genuinely moves the number is response speed: in a market where three firms are quoting the same job, the one that replies with a real figure the same day wins a disproportionate share. Halving your quote turnaround does more for cost per booking than any change available inside the ad account.

Four ways this goes wrong

  • Bidding on “removals” and “removal companies” against comparison sites. They fund those clicks from selling the lead to four firms, which is a business model your van cannot compete with.
  • An enquiry form with no move date field. Without it you cannot tell whether you are available, cannot prioritise, and end up quoting carefully for a date you were never free on.
  • Quoting in two days. Movers are working to a completion date and will book the first firm that gives them a credible number, so a slow quote loses jobs the campaign already paid for.
  • Running full budget while the diary is full. Removals capacity is hard-limited by vans and dates, so buying August clicks in August when August is booked is spending money to disappoint people.

Questions

Why not just bid on the main removals keywords?

Because comparison and lead-selling sites own them. Their model is to buy the click, capture the enquiry and sell it to several removals firms, so they can pay more for that click than any single firm can. Competing there means paying a premium to reach the same customer they will sell to you anyway. Long-tail route and town terms are cheaper and closer to a booking.

What should the enquiry form ask for?

Move date and both postcodes first, then property size, then contact details. The date tells you whether you are available, which is the only question that matters before anything else. The postcodes let you price the job without a call. Asking for a phone number before any of that increases abandonment and gives you an enquiry you cannot act on.

How much difference does quote speed really make?

In this sector, more than the campaign settings. Every mover is collecting three quotes against a fixed completion date, and the firm that replies within the hour with a real figure is often compared against two firms who have not replied at all yet. Automated acknowledgement plus a same-day figure will change your cost per booked move more than any bid adjustment.
