Flooring Contractors
Marketing for flooring contractors
Flooring is two businesses wearing one name. Supply and fit pays; fit-only labour for a floor somebody bought online does not, and most accounts we inherit are quietly buying the second one at full price.

In short
Marketing for flooring contractors in the UK turns on three things that are specific to the trade. Fit-only labour runs at roughly £8 to £18 per square metre for laminate and LVT, so a customer who has already bought their floor online is offering a £300 to £700 job with no material margin in it at all. Supply and fit is where the money sits: engineered oak at £70 to £120 per square metre fitted, a typical domestic job landing between £1,200 and £4,500, a whole house in engineered board at £6,000 to £15,000. Google search wins flooring and it is not close. The biggest source of wasted spend is retail and the sheds, searches such as laminate flooring B&Q and cheap LVT, which has to be negatived out before the budget means anything.
The economics that should drive the budget
Fit-only labour runs at roughly £8 to £18 per square metre for laminate and LVT, so a customer who has already bought their floor online is offering a £300 to £700 job with no material margin in it at all. Supply and fit is where the money sits: engineered oak at £70 to £120 per square metre fitted, a typical domestic job landing between £1,200 and £4,500, a whole house in engineered board at £6,000 to £15,000. Commercial contract work — safety vinyl in a care home, sports vinyl in a school — runs from £10,000 to £60,000.
Close rates are high compared with most trades, because the buyer has already decided to replace the floor before they search. Something like one in two on a measured supply-and-fit quote is normal, and far lower on fit-only, where you are being price-checked against whoever is cheapest this week. Subfloor preparation, screed and levelling is the line that decides whether a job made money, which is why the measure appointment matters more than the phone call. An enquiry that reaches a measure is worth several hundred pounds of expected margin. One quoted over the phone from a rough square-metre figure is worth very little.
Seasonality
Flooring is an indoor trade so the weather barely matters, but the calendar does. The strong run is September to February: people redecorate before Christmas, the new-year push arrives in January, and cold weather makes a worn carpet feel worse than it ever does in July. Late spring and summer are the soft months, when the money goes outside. Two things cut across that. House moves drive a great deal of flooring, and the empty-house window between completion and the furniture arriving is a genuine buying trigger, so the summer moving season partly compensates for the domestic dip. And commercial contract flooring runs on the opposite rhythm entirely — schools, offices and care homes want the work done during the summer holidays or a Christmas shutdown, so the quoting happens in spring for a July fit.
What we configure
- Split supply-and-fit and fit-only campaigns, with a minimum charge on fit-only
- Retail, DIY and brand-shopper negative lists built before launch
- Price guidance per square metre published by product type
- Measure appointment booking rather than a general contact form
- Uplift, disposal, furniture moving and subfloor spelled out in writing
- Separate commercial campaign timed to shutdown and holiday periods
- Google Business Profile with real finished floors, not supplier stock images
What people actually search, and what it is worth
| Intent | Typical search | Value | How we handle it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Supply and fit | engineered wood flooring [town], LVT fitted, carpet fitters near me | High, fast | Core campaign. Price per square metre in the ad copy and a measure appointment as the conversion action. |
| Fit only | floor fitter near me, laminate fitting cost, someone to fit LVT | Low, fast | Own campaign with a minimum charge stated, or excluded outright if the margin does not support it. |
| Commercial and contract | contract flooring [county], safety vinyl installer, altro flooring contractor | High, slow | Separate campaign and page, run on accreditations, references and willingness to work out of hours. |
| Restoration and repair | floor sanding [town], parquet restoration, squeaky floorboards | Medium, fast | Dedicated ad groups. Low competition and unusually good conversion because the intent is exact. |
Where the budget leaks
Every sector attracts searches that can never become a customer. These are the ones specific to flooring contractors, and they go into the negative keyword list before launch rather than after the first invoice.
| Category | Example searches | Why it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Retail and the sheds | laminate flooring B&Q, cheap LVT, vinyl roll, underlay price | The retail chains and online sellers own this intent. You are paying to lose an argument with a warehouse. |
| Product brand hunters | karndean prices, amtico samples, quick-step laminate, herringbone LVT reviews | Worth having only if you are an approved retailer. Otherwise you are funding research for a purchase made elsewhere. |
| How-to research | how to lay laminate, fitting underfloor heating, floor sander hire | Enormous volume from people doing it themselves at the weekend. Pure information intent. |
| Trade and employment | flooring wholesaler, trade counter, floor fitter wanted, self-employed fitter | Other fitters and trade buyers clicking your ads. It looks like relevant traffic in the report and never books a measure. |

A flooring customer arrives further down the line than customers in most trades. They have already chosen the product, often to the brand and the colour, and they have a rough square-metre figure from pacing the room out. So the first question is price and the second is when. This is a fast cycle — days rather than weeks — and a firm that takes three days to reply has already lost to one that answered in an hour.
What they actually check is what is included, because that is where the quotes differ. Will you move the furniture. Will you lift and take away the old carpet, and is there a charge for it. What happens if the subfloor needs levelling once it is up. How many days is the house unusable. A quote answering all four in writing beats a cheaper one that does not, because most buyers have already been caught once by a surcharge appearing on fitting day. A showroom, if you have one, closes work by itself: people want to stand on the sample rather than look at a photograph of it. If you do not have one, taking samples to the measure appointment solves the same problem and is worth saying in the advert.
Which channel wins here
Google search wins flooring and it is not close. The buyer has an immediate need, a short cycle and a specific product in mind, which is exactly what search is for. Google Business Profile does as much work as the website — “flooring near me” and “carpet fitters [town]” are map-pack searches, and a profile with photographs of real finished floors and recent reviews will out-earn a website redesign. SEO on product-plus-town pages and honest per-square-metre pricing is the cheapest long-term traffic in the trade.
Meta prospecting is the thing that does not work here, and firms spend a lot of money finding that out. Flooring is a replacement purchase triggered by an event — a move, a leak, a floor that has finally given up — and no amount of interest targeting creates that event. Homeowner audiences are far too broad, and what comes back is people who liked a photograph. Meta earns a place for two narrow jobs: retargeting people who asked for a measure and did not book it, and keeping finished work in front of a local audience so the name is familiar when the floor finally goes. That is the whole of its usefulness here.
Questions from flooring contractors
Should I take fit-only work at all?
It depends whether the diary is full. Fit-only carries no material margin, the customer has already price-shopped, and they will blame you for a floor you did not supply. If you need volume, take it with a stated minimum charge and a written subfloor caveat. If you are turning work away, exclude it from the advertising and put the whole budget behind supply and fit.
How do I compete with the big retailers on price?
Not on price, on the parts they are bad at. The chains subcontract the fitting, quote before anyone has looked at the subfloor, and add charges on the day. Say plainly that you measure before quoting, that uplift and disposal are included or priced up front, and that the person who quotes is the person who fits. That is worth more than shaving a pound off the metre rate.
Do I need a showroom to compete?
No, but you need to solve what a showroom solves. People want to stand on a floor before they buy it. With no showroom, take samples to the measure appointment and say so in the advertising, because a home visit with samples is a stronger offer than a trip to a retail park on a Saturday. If you do have one, put it in the ads and on the map listing, because it converts.
Is commercial flooring worth advertising for?
Yes, but as a separate campaign with different expectations. Search volume for contract flooring is thin, the cycle runs months, and the buyer is a facilities manager or main contractor checking references and insurance rather than comparing metre rates. A handful of enquiries a month counts as success there, because one care home refit is worth a year of domestic jobs.
