Meta Ads · Scaffolders

Meta Ads for scaffolding firms: a narrow, real use case

Of every sector we work in, scaffolding is the one where we most often advise against paid social for lead generation. The buyer is usually another trade, the need arrives with a start date attached, and nobody browsing Instagram develops a sudden appetite for eight weeks of frontage hire. That is not the end of the argument, though.

In short

Meta Ads for scaffolders in the UK needs a different build from a generic Meta Ads account, and this is how PipelineOS structures it. Take the objection seriously first. Scaffolding demand is derived: it exists because somebody else has a roof to strip, a wall to render or a chimney to rebuild. The first audience layer is Trade memory campaign: yard shots, a rig going up in timelapse, a design drawing for an awkward job. The most common way this goes wrong: running lead-generation campaigns at commercial scaffolding buyers and measuring them on cost per lead.

How we build it

Take the objection seriously first. Scaffolding demand is derived: it exists because somebody else has a roof to strip, a wall to render or a chimney to rebuild. Derived demand has a date on it, and a dated need is captured, not created. Somebody who needs scaffold up on the fourteenth is ringing round on the sixth, and they are ringing whoever appears when they search. That is why the money in this sector belongs to search advertising and organic visibility, and a scaffolding firm with a fixed budget should exhaust both before opening a Meta account.

Now the part that is genuinely true and almost nobody uses. The people who commission scaffold are roofers, builders, renderers, chimney specialists and property managers, and they are on Facebook constantly, often in the evening, often in local trade groups. You cannot reliably target them by job title, and interest targeting for construction trades is vague at best. What you can do is run a low-budget, permanently-on campaign across your operating area whose only purpose is that when a roofer needs scaffold in March, your name is the one that surfaces unprompted. That is a memory objective, judged on reach and frequency, and it costs very little to keep running.

The second real use is recruitment, and for many scaffolding firms it is worth more than any enquiry campaign. Advertising for CISRS-carded scaffolders and trainee labourers on Facebook reaches people who are working rather than people who are actively job hunting, and that is a different and better pool than a job board. Note that employment advertising carries obligations: keep the wording non-discriminatory, and if you ever run these ads to audiences in the United States or Canada, Meta's special ad category rules for employment strip most targeting options. In the United Kingdom the practical constraint is simply writing a fair advert.

Third, domestic hire. A modest slice of scaffolding turnover comes from homeowners doing their own chimney, gutter or painting work, and that slice does respond to a feed, because a homeowner genuinely may not know that hiring scaffold for a fortnight is affordable and straightforward. Content explaining what a domestic hire costs in bands, how long erection takes and what happens to the drive performs decently. It will not fill a yard, but it is real revenue and it is the only lead-generation case here we would defend.

Audience layers

Three layers doing three different jobs. Skipping the warm and hot layers is why boosted posts disappoint.

Audience layerWho is in itWhat to show them
Trade memory campaignBroad adults 25 to 60 across your operating radius, no interest layers, very low daily budget, running permanentlyYard shots, a rig going up in timelapse, a design drawing for an awkward job. The objective is reach and recall, not clicks. Measure on frequency and unprompted enquiry volume, never on cost per lead.
RecruitmentAdults 18 to 50 within commuting distance, run seasonally when you need bodies rather than continuouslyThe gaffer talking to camera about pay structure, what the week looks like, whether you fund the card. Keep the wording fair and non-discriminatory. Route to a simple form, not a careers portal nobody completes.
Domestic hire educationHomeowners across the tighter half of your radius, broad delivery, excluding your trade customer listWhat a two week domestic hire involves and roughly costs, in bands. Most homeowners assume it is out of reach. Correcting that assumption is the entire advertisement.
Website visitors, 30 daysAnyone who reached a service or contact page and did not enquireOne reminder, capped hard. A trade buyer who visited and did not ring is usually mid-quote-comparison, and a single unobtrusive reappearance is worth more than a sequence.

Budget and the arithmetic

This is the one sector on the site where we would routinely recommend a smaller Meta budget than the client expects. A reasonable figure for the trade memory and domestic education campaigns together is a couple of hundred pounds a month of ad spend, running all year, on top of a properly funded search account rather than instead of one. Recruitment bursts are separate and short: fund them hard for two or three weeks when you need people, then stop.

The arithmetic that governs the decision is the shape of your order book. A commercial contract worth five figures over a long hire justifies almost any acquisition cost, but it is won on relationships, reputation and turning up to price the job, and no advertisement short-circuits that. A domestic hire worth several hundred pounds will not tolerate a high cost per enquiry, so if the domestic campaign is not producing enquiries cheaply within six weeks, turn it off rather than optimising it. We would rather you reinvested that money in a site that converts the traffic you already have.

One number worth keeping in perspective: IAB UK put total UK digital ad spend at £40.5bn in 2025, with social accounting for £11.5bn of it, roughly twenty-eight per cent and up twenty-one per cent on the year. Social is where the market is going. That does not mean it is where your scaffolding enquiries are, and a growing channel is not the same thing as a suitable one. Judge the channel by the shape of your demand, which you can read straight off your own job records, not by where the wider market is heading.

Four ways this goes wrong

  • Running lead-generation campaigns at commercial scaffolding buyers and measuring them on cost per lead. The trade campaign is a memory exercise and holding it to a direct response target kills it in week three.
  • Assuming interest targeting finds builders. Construction interest categories on Meta are broad and noisy, and a plain geographic audience usually outperforms them.
  • Spending on paid social before the search account and Google Business Profile are properly built. In this sector that is putting the third channel first.
  • Ignoring recruitment, which for many scaffolding firms is the highest-value thing Facebook does and costs a fraction of an agency fee for a single hire.
  • Advertising domestic hire without stating any price context. The whole barrier is that homeowners assume scaffolding is not for them.

Questions

Are you really saying not to run Facebook ads?

For lead generation in commercial scaffolding, largely yes, and we would rather lose the work than take a fee for something we expect to underperform. The channel has three defensible jobs in this sector: staying in the memory of local trades, recruiting, and educating homeowners that domestic hire is affordable. Those are worth doing on a modest budget. Filling a commercial order book from a feed is not realistic.

How do we reach roofers and builders if we cannot target them?

Geography and creative do the work that targeting cannot. Run a plain local audience and let the content self-select: a timelapse of a complicated rig, a shot of a design drawing, a note about your turnaround on small jobs. Trades stop for that material and homeowners scroll past it, which is the filter you wanted. Volume is wasted and that is fine at this budget.

Does posting in local trade Facebook groups count?

It is different work and often more productive per hour than paid advertising here, but it is not something an agency can credibly do on your behalf. Group members can tell within one post whether a real scaffolder is talking. If someone in the firm will answer questions in those groups honestly, that plus a small paid reach campaign underneath it is the strongest combination available.
