SEO for IT support firms, where one ranking can be worth a five-year contract
Managed IT is one of the few sectors where a single organic enquiry can be worth tens of thousands of pounds over its life. That changes what is worth writing. A page producing one enquiry a quarter would be a failure for a plumber and a triumph for an MSP, and the content strategy should be built on that fact.

In short
SEO for it support companies in the UK needs a different build from a generic SEO plan, and this is how PipelineOS structures it. City and region pages actually work here, which is unusual and worth saying plainly. Businesses genuinely do search for IT support in their city, because they want someone who can be on site within the hour when a server room floods, and because procurement often specifies a local supplier. The first page worth building is City and region pages: legitimate here because buyers want on-site response. The most common way this goes wrong: twenty city pages differing only by place name, which is one of the few genuinely thin-content patterns Google is consistently good at recognising.
How we build it
City and region pages actually work here, which is unusual and worth saying plainly. Businesses genuinely do search for IT support in their city, because they want someone who can be on site within the hour when a server room floods, and because procurement often specifies a local supplier. So a proper page for each city you serve is legitimate — but proper means response times to that city, engineers based there, named local clients where you have permission, and the specific business parks or districts you cover. A page that swaps the city name into the same six paragraphs is the thin content everybody warns about, and it will not rank against a competitor who wrote something real.
Vertical pages are the second layer and the higher-margin one. IT support for accountancy practices, for law firms, for dental practices, for manufacturing, for charities, for recruitment agencies. Each has software nobody else understands, a compliance regime and a set of anxieties, and a page that names the practice management system a firm actually runs will beat a general managed services page every time. This is also where the switching conversation happens, because the reason a firm changes MSP is almost always that the incumbent did not understand their sector.
Compliance and security content is the third layer and it carries most of the top-of-funnel traffic. Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, what an ISO 27001 audit involves, supplier security questionnaires, phishing training, backup and disaster recovery testing, what to do in the first hour of a ransomware incident. These are searched by exactly the person who signs an MSP contract, usually under pressure from a client or an insurer, and the firm that has written the clearest explanation is the one they ring. Content about a specific certification is particularly valuable because it arrives with a deadline attached.
Two supporting pieces. Migration and project content — moving to Microsoft 365, leaving an on-premise server, office relocation IT, Windows end-of-life upgrades — catches businesses at the moment they are most likely to review their provider, which is the single best moment to be visible. And the pricing page, which most MSPs refuse to build. Publishing a per-user, per-month range with what sits in each tier disqualifies the enquiries that were never viable and dramatically improves the ones that arrive, in a market where almost every competitor makes the buyer request a conversation first.
Pages worth building
The pages worth building, in the order we would build them. A small number written properly, not a page per town.
| Page to build | Target searches | Why it earns its place |
|---|---|---|
| City and region pages | IT support [city], managed IT services [county], IT support company near me | Legitimate here because buyers want on-site response. Must carry local engineers, response times and real detail, or they are thin pages that will not hold position. |
| Vertical pages | IT support for accountants, IT support for law firms, dental practice IT support, manufacturing IT support | Where the switching decision is won. Name the sector software, the compliance regime and the failure modes a general provider misses. |
| Compliance and certification | Cyber Essentials certification help, ISO 27001 what is involved, supplier security questionnaire help, cyber insurance requirements | Searched by the budget holder under external pressure and usually with a deadline. The highest-intent informational content on the site. |
| Migration and project content | migrate from on premise server to cloud, Microsoft 365 migration cost, office move IT relocation, Windows end of life upgrade | Catches firms at the exact moment they review their existing provider. Project work also opens the door to the managed contract behind it. |
| Pricing and comparison | IT support cost per user, managed IT pricing UK, how much should IT support cost small business | Large volume, almost universally dodged by competitors. A published per-user range filters unviable enquiries and wins the ones you want. |

The order of work is dictated by how slow this sector is. Months one and two: technical foundations, the two or three city pages that matter most, and the pricing page. Months three to six: the first two verticals, chosen from where you already have clients rather than where the market looks attractive, plus the core compliance explainers. Months six to twelve: remaining verticals, migration content and the slow authority work — vendor partner directories, local chamber and business group presence, genuine case studies with named clients. Expect first enquiries around month four to seven; expect the pipeline to feel real in year two.
Now the arithmetic that justifies the patience. Managed IT typically prices between £35 and £90 per user per month depending on inclusion and sector. A thirty-seat client at £55 is £1,650 a month, and MSP contracts are notoriously sticky — four years is a fair average life once a provider is embedded, and many run far longer. That is roughly £79,000 of contract revenue, before project work, hardware margin and licence resale, which commonly add a further 15–30%.
Take a 40% contribution after engineering time, tooling and licence costs, and that client contributes around £31,000 across the relationship. If one in six genuine enquiries converts — realistic, since businesses shortlist three providers and some are simply price-checking their incumbent — an enquiry carries about £5,200 of expected contribution. There is no version of content production that costs anything like that, which is why the correct question for MSP SEO is never whether it pays but whether the firm will commit for the twelve months it needs to compound.
Four ways this goes wrong
- Twenty city pages differing only by place name, which is one of the few genuinely thin-content patterns Google is consistently good at recognising.
- Writing about technology instead of about the buyer’s problem. Nobody procuring IT support searches for hyperconverged infrastructure; they search for why their email keeps going down.
- Refusing to publish any pricing, which guarantees every enquiry starts with a discovery call about budget and a proportion of good prospects never make contact at all.
- Ignoring compliance content, when Cyber Essentials and supplier security questionnaires are the deadline-driven trigger that makes a business go looking for a new provider.
- Building generic managed services pages when the switching decision is almost always made on sector understanding, which only a vertical page can demonstrate.

Questions
Do city pages work for IT support?
They do, unlike in most sectors, because buyers want on-site response and procurement often requires a local supplier. The condition is that each page carries genuine local substance: engineers based there, stated response times, districts and business parks covered, and clients in the area where you have permission to name them. Templated city pages with the name swapped will not hold a position.
Should an MSP publish prices?
A per-user, per-month range with what each tier includes is one of the highest-return pages you can build. Buyers search for it constantly and almost every competitor refuses to answer, so the firm that does wins the enquiry. It also removes the businesses whose budget was never going to support a managed contract, which saves a great deal of pre-sales time.
How long does MSP SEO take to produce contracts?
First enquiries commonly appear around month four to seven, and the channel feels reliable somewhere in the second year. The delay is partly competitive and partly that businesses change IT provider on their own timetable, usually at contract renewal or after an incident. The compensation is contract length: work published this year is still generating enquiries in year three.
Which verticals should we write about?
The ones where you already support several clients well. You need the sector software, the real objections and the particular failure modes, and you only have those from experience. A page about supporting law firms written by somebody who has never dealt with a case management system reads exactly as it is, and the reader is a professional who will notice.
