Construction websites written for the person screening you for risk

Nobody lands on a contractor’s website looking for inspiration. They are a client, a quantity surveyor, an architect or a framework administrator, and their job is to decide whether putting you on a list creates a problem for them. The site is a capability statement in web form.

In short

Web Design for construction companies in the UK needs a different build from an off-the-shelf website, and this is how PipelineOS structures it. Start with what gets checked. Accreditations named individually — CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 — with registration numbers and renewal dates rather than a row of logos, because a logo cannot be verified and an expired one is worse than none. The section that carries the most weight is Accreditation and insurance page: it is the first page a pre-qualification check opens. The most common way this goes wrong: a gallery of finished buildings with no contract value, no duration and no sector, which is a brochure for a buyer who needed a comparable.

How we build it

Start with what gets checked. Accreditations named individually — CHAS, Constructionline, SafeContractor, ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001 — with registration numbers and renewal dates rather than a row of logos, because a logo cannot be verified and an expired one is worse than none. Insurance stated as figures: employers’ liability, public liability, contractors’ all risks, and professional indemnity where you carry design responsibility. A turnover band belongs there too, unglamorous as it is, because no competent buyer awards a contract worth a third of a contractor’s annual turnover.

Projects are the evidence, and each needs to read as a record rather than a photograph. Sector, contract value band, duration, procurement route, form of contract, client type, and a paragraph on what was difficult and how it was handled. The buyer is looking for a comparable — something the same size, in the same sector, under the same route — and a gallery of handsome buildings answers none of that. Alongside them, key personnel pages naming qualifications properly: SMSTS, CSCS levels, NEBOSH, chartered status, and a named contact for pre-qualification.

The second audience is your supply chain and the people you are trying to recruit, and they must not clutter the buyer’s path. Subcontractor registration and careers each get a top-level link and their own form, well away from the capability section. The primary action is not a phone call: it is reaching a current capability pack and a named person. So the site needs a document area holding policies, insurance certificates, accreditation certificates and your social value and sustainability statements, from which a pre-qualification questionnaire can be answered without anyone emailing you at all.

The pages that do the work

The pages that carry the work, and what each one has to do before it earns the enquiry.

Page or sectionWhat goes on itWhy it converts
Accreditation and insurance pageEach scheme named with its registration number and renewal date, insurance cover stated as figures, turnover band, and health and safety governanceIt is the first page a pre-qualification check opens. Numbers and dates get you through it; a wall of logos raises a question.
Project records rather than a gallerySector, value band, duration, procurement route, form of contract, client type, and what was genuinely difficultBuyers are looking for a comparable. A project without a value or a duration cannot be compared with the job they are letting.
Document libraryHealth and safety, quality, environmental and equality policies, certificates, method statement templates, social value and carbon statements, all current and datedIt lets a surveyor answer half a questionnaire at eleven at night without waiting on your email, which is often the difference between making the list and not.
Separate supply chain and careers routesSubcontractor registration with trades and coverage, plus vacancies and site-based roles, each on their own top-level linkBoth matter commercially and neither belongs in front of a client. Split out, they recruit without diluting the capability story.

Scope and what drives it

These are larger builds, generally £2,400–£4,000, and the scale comes from structure rather than styling. Project records need a consistent template and somebody willing to dig out values, durations and procurement routes. The document library needs a sensible place for files, a naming convention and a review date, or it becomes a graveyard of expired certificates within eighteen months, which is worse than not having one.

The value test is not enquiry volume, because there will not be much of it. A single contract can be worth £150,000–£2m, and the site’s job is to keep you on lists and get you through the first screen. If it produces two additional invitations to tender in a year, of which you win one, everything else about the argument is academic. The risk it removes is just as real: a site that shows an expired accreditation or an insurance figure below what a client requires can quietly lose you a place you never knew you were being considered for.

Four ways this goes wrong

  • A gallery of finished buildings with no contract value, no duration and no sector, which is a brochure for a buyer who needed a comparable.
  • Accreditation logos as images, with no registration numbers and no renewal dates, on a site that will be read by somebody whose job is verification.
  • Recruitment adverts dominating the homepage a prospective client lands on, which reads as a firm short of people rather than a firm worth appointing.
  • A single generic enquiry address on a site being read by a surveyor with a tender deadline on Friday, who needed a name and a direct line.

Questions

Do project pages really need contract values?

A band is enough, and it is the most useful thing on the page. A client letting a two million pound scheme is checking whether you have delivered at that scale, and photographs cannot answer it. If confidentiality prevents a figure, give the duration, the sector, the procurement route and the form of contract, which together still let someone judge comparability.

Is a document library worth building?

For anyone working on tendered or framework work, yes. Pre-qualification questionnaires ask for the same policies and certificates every time, and a page where they can be viewed and downloaded saves your team a recurring afternoon and gets you assessed sooner. The discipline it demands is a review date, because an out-of-date certificate on public display is a worse signal than no library.

Should careers and subcontractor pages be on the main site?

Yes, but on their own routes rather than in the client journey. Recruitment is frequently the constraint on growth in construction, and the site is your cheapest channel for it. What causes harm is putting vacancies and supply chain notices in front of a client who arrived to assess your capability, so give each its own top-level link and its own form.
