Google Ads for plumbers and heating engineers, structured for the cold snap
Plumbing demand is not seasonal so much as meteorological. The first hard frost of the year produces a step change in “no hot water” searches within a day, and the accounts that profit from it are the ones whose budgets were already set to move.

In short
Google Ads for plumbers in the UK needs a different build from a generic Google Ads account, and this is how PipelineOS structures it. Four campaigns, divided by how quickly the money arrives. Emergency plumbing runs 24/7 with call extensions and the highest bids in the account. The first ad group to build is Emergency plumbing: highest bids, 24/7, call-only on mobile. The most common way this goes wrong: bidding on boiler brand names without holding the accreditation.
How we build it
Four campaigns, divided by how quickly the money arrives. Emergency plumbing runs 24/7 with call extensions and the highest bids in the account. Boiler repair and servicing runs a schedule weighted to mornings and evenings. Boiler installation is separate and is where the real value sits. Bathrooms sit in a fourth campaign with completely different economics and a decision cycle measured in months rather than hours.
The installation campaign is where the structure gets specific. It is organised by boiler brand, not by generic terms, because a buyer searching “Worcester Bosch installer near me” has already chosen the appliance and is now choosing a fitter. Separate ad groups for Worcester Bosch, Vaillant, Ideal and Baxi, each with ad copy naming the brand and your accreditation level for it, convert far above a shared “new boiler” ad group. Alongside them sits a price-research ad group for “new boiler cost” and “combi boiler price”, bid lower and routed to a page carrying real installed prices, because the fixed price online sellers have trained this market to expect a number before a visit.
Cold-snap scaling is a written rule, not a reaction. When the forecast shows sustained sub-zero temperatures, the emergency and repair campaigns go up by two to four times for the duration and the bid strategy moves off target CPA, which will otherwise refuse to compete once everyone else raises bids. Match types stay tight on emergency, where the phrasing is predictable, and can loosen on installation, where the discovery language is wider. Geography is presence-only and tight, because a plumber’s productive radius is genuinely small once you count parking and traffic. Gas Safe registration number goes in the ad copy, not just the footer.
Ad groups
The account structure in practice. Ad groups stay tight so the ad can genuinely match the search, which lowers cost per click for the same position.
| Ad group | Example keywords | Bids and handling |
|---|---|---|
| Emergency plumbing | emergency plumber [town], burst pipe, leak under sink, plumber out today | Highest bids, 24/7, call-only on mobile. Scale two to four times on a freeze warning and drop back within a week. |
| Boiler installation by brand | Worcester Bosch installer, Vaillant boiler fitted, Ideal boiler installation [town] | One ad group per brand you are accredited for, with the accreditation named in the headline. Beats generic boiler ad groups by a wide margin. |
| Boiler repair and servicing | boiler not working, boiler service [town], no hot water, boiler repair cost | The cold-snap engine. Cheap clicks, immediate conversion, and the cheapest route into the installation pipeline when the boiler turns out to be twenty years old. |
| Bathroom installation | bathroom fitters [town], full bathroom installation, wet room installation | Months of consideration and a different buyer entirely. Low bids, long conversion window, retargeting on, and a landing page that is mostly photographs. |

Typical spend runs £500–£1,500 a month with a deliberate winter bulge; some firms double for six weeks and cut hard in July. Emergency clicks are expensive at £5–£12 and go higher during a freeze. Boiler installation clicks run £4–£10. Cost per enquiry typically lands at £20–£50 on emergency and repair, and £35–£90 on boiler installation.
The installation arithmetic is where firms get caught. A combi swap at £2,200–£3,500 often carries only £600–£900 of margin after the appliance, so a £70 enquiry cost at a one-in-three close is around £210 per job won — workable, but not if your close rate is one in five because you quote three days later than the online fixed-price sellers. Emergency work is the opposite: a £150–£400 call-out closing at better than one in two makes a £35 enquiry look cheap, and it seeds servicing and installation work later. Speed of response moves these numbers more than bid management does.
Four ways this goes wrong
- Bidding on boiler brand names without holding the accreditation. The manufacturer’s installer-finder outranks you, and the enquiries that do arrive expect a warranty length you cannot offer.
- Advertising emergency plumbing on a diverted mobile that goes unanswered under a floor. This is the single most expensive habit in the trade, and the fix is missed-call text-back rather than a bidding change.
- Running the same budget in January and July. Plumbing demand is not flat, and a fixed monthly budget means underspending during the only weeks that genuinely pay and overspending in a warm August.
- Broad matching “plumber” and paying for plumbers merchants, plumbing courses, plumbing jobs and people looking for parts. Merchant searches in particular are high volume and never convert.

Questions
How quickly should the budget move in a cold snap?
The day before, not the day after. Freeze-related searches spike within about twenty-four hours of the temperature dropping and decay over roughly a week as people get sorted. We set a rule in advance: sustained sub-zero forecast means emergency and repair budgets multiply and bidding moves to maximise conversions, reverting once the forecast clears.
Is it worth advertising bathrooms alongside plumbing?
Only in a separate campaign with a separate budget, and only if you genuinely want that work. Bathroom enquiries take weeks, need photographs and a showroom-style page, and convert nothing like a leak. Mixed into a plumbing campaign they look like poor performance for two months and then get switched off just as the first one closes.
Should I show boiler prices in the ads?
Yes, or at least a from-price. The fixed-price online sellers have taught this market to expect a number without a home visit, so a page that says “contact us for a quote” loses to them before you ever speak. Publishing an installed range with the variables named — flue run, system type, gas run — filters out the people who were never going to pay for a proper installation.
