Meta Ads for removals firms: the date is the problem

Removals demand has a date attached and a short fuse. Somebody exchanging contracts on the twelfth books a van within days, and they book it from a search result or a recommendation. That timing is what makes paid social awkward here, and it is also what points at the two things the channel genuinely does well.

In short

Meta Ads for removals companies in the UK needs a different build from a generic Meta Ads account, and this is how PipelineOS structures it. Be clear about the mismatch. The moment of need in removals is narrow, dated and urgent, which is the profile search captures best and a feed captures worst. The first audience layer is Storage, broad local: the unit, the access hours, the security, and what a month costs in bands. The most common way this goes wrong: running a generic house removals campaign at the whole town.

How we build it

Be clear about the mismatch. The moment of need in removals is narrow, dated and urgent, which is the profile search captures best and a feed captures worst. If you advertise a house removal to a broad local audience, the overwhelming majority are not moving this year and the few who are have probably already booked. That is why removals firms who run generic social campaigns report poor results and conclude the platform does not work. The platform works; the campaign was aimed at the wrong moment.

The first thing that does work is storage, and it is a different business with a different clock. Storage demand arrives from renovations, downsizing, decluttering, divorce, probate, students, businesses outgrowing a unit, and chains that have gone wrong. Almost none of that is searched for early, most of it is a slow realisation rather than a fixed date, and the contract value compounds monthly. If you have storage capacity, that is where a removals firm's social budget belongs, and it is frequently the highest-margin part of the operation.

The second is arriving before the date. A household two or three months from a move is not yet searching but is already anxious, and content that addresses the anxiety — how far ahead to book, what packing services actually cost, how completion day works when the chain slips — puts you in mind before the exchange. This is a recall objective. You will not attribute it cleanly and you should not try; what you should do is ask every enquirer where they heard of you and log it.

Third, packing and part services. Full packing, fragile-only packing, dismantling and reassembly and single-item moves are upsells most customers do not know exist. Advertising them to people who have already enquired, and to your past customer list, costs very little and raises average order value without needing a single new customer. The related automation work here — sending the packing options automatically after a quote goes out — usually returns more than the advertising does.

Audience layers

Three layers doing three different jobs. Skipping the warm and hot layers is why boosted posts disappoint.

Audience layerWho is in itWhat to show them
Storage, broad localAdults across your catchment, broad delivery, no interest layers, running all yearThe unit, the access hours, the security, and what a month costs in bands. The reasons people need storage are varied and unpredictable, so keep the message plain and be there when the reason arrives.
Pre-move recallBroad homeowners in your area, low budget, permanently on, judged on reach rather than responseHow far ahead to book, what a survey involves, what happens when completion moves. The objective is being remembered in six weeks, not clicked today. Do not hold this to a cost per lead.
Radius around recent jobsA tight radius around streets where you have recently moved somebody, refreshed weeklyThe van on their road, plainly. Moving is contagious in a street and a firm that visibly works locally is the one recommended over the fence.
Quote page leavers, 21 daysReached the quote or survey page and did not submit, short window because the decision is fastAvailability, insurance cover, and what the crew size means for the day. Short, practical, and stop after three weeks because the move has happened either way.
Past customers and packing upsellsYour own customer database, within existing marketing permissionsStorage, packing services and the next move. Households move repeatedly and a firm that stayed in contact is booked without a comparison.

Budget and the arithmetic

Most removals firms should keep this modest: £300–£1,000 a month of ad spend, with the majority behind storage if you have it and a small standing amount on recall. The one exception is a firm with significant storage capacity to fill, where the monthly recurring value justifies spending considerably more and where the payback period is measured in months rather than weeks.

The arithmetic differs sharply between the two products. A house move is a single transaction with a fixed value and a tight tolerance for acquisition cost. A storage contract is recurring, often for far longer than the customer initially expects, and tolerates a much higher cost to acquire. Modelling them together produces a target that is too tight for storage and too loose for removals, and it is the commonest reason these accounts are judged wrongly.

Be realistic about attribution. Recall campaigns influence enquiries that arrive weeks later through a search or a phone call, and no platform report will credit them properly. Rather than pretending otherwise, ask on the enquiry form and on the phone, log it, and read the pattern over a quarter. It is cruder than a dashboard and considerably more honest, and it is the same principle we apply to measurement generally on the methodology page. If you cannot sustain that discipline, the honest advice is to skip recall and put everything into search and local visibility.

Four ways this goes wrong

  • Running a generic house removals campaign at the whole town. The overwhelming majority of that audience is not moving and the few who are have already booked.
  • Treating storage as an afterthought when it has the recurring revenue, the unpredictable trigger and the profile that suits a feed best.
  • Holding the recall campaign to a cost per lead. It exists to be remembered at exchange, and measured on immediate response it will always look like waste.
  • Never asking enquirers where they heard of you, which is the only reliable way to see the recall effect at all.
  • Ignoring past customers, in a trade where people move repeatedly and where a remembered firm is booked without a second quote.

Questions

Is Facebook advertising worth it for a removals firm?

For house moves alone, usually not much. The need is dated and urgent, which means search and recommendation take it. For storage it is genuinely worth it, and for staying in mind ahead of a move it has real if unmeasurable value. If you have no storage and no appetite for a recall budget you cannot attribute, we would tell you to spend the money elsewhere.

Should we target people who have recently sold a house?

You cannot do this reliably. Meta does not offer a dependable audience for people mid-transaction in the UK, and the interest-based approximations are weak. What works better is partnership: estate agents, conveyancers and lettings agents know before anyone else does. Advertising underneath those relationships is more productive than trying to build the audience from targeting options.

How do we advertise storage without sounding like a warehouse?

Lead with the reason rather than the facility. People do not want storage, they want somewhere for the furniture while the kitchen is done, or while a house is emptied after a death, or between a sale and a purchase that did not line up. Naming those situations plainly and kindly reaches the person at the moment the thought forms, which a photograph of a corridor of units never does.
